Science Initiative staff recently surveyed for Spotted Turtles in SC. As part of a regional effort, we're conducting surveys for these turtles in SC, GA, and FL over the next 3 years. Spring's ideal for exploring southeast wetlands; many species, like cottonmouths, become active.

We recently had a paper published in the journal Wetlands. Working with collaborators from Virginia Tech, we examined the hydrology of wetlands that provide critical breeding habitat for Reticulated Flatwoods Salamanders.

Orianne Society & Georgia DNR team up for a #prescribedburn . The interagency burn team is a coalition of partners across Georgia with the mission to increase prescribed fire on the landscape. Working together, we are able to raise the overall work capacity across the state.

Shortly after spotting Clementine on April 9, Kiley spotted another familiar #WoodTurtle . Bruce turns up on surveys often, and consequently, on our social media as well. He has also become a bit of a #turtle 'shellebrity' among our conservation partners in Vermont.

#WorldTurtleDay is a great time to feature our on-site Turtle Sanctuary, which houses non-releasable native turtles rehabilitated by AWARE, Chatt Nature Center, and the The Orianne Society. Help provide care by symbolically naming one at the link below!

Last year, we let our followers suggest and vote on names for #WoodTurtle No.1, the first turtle given an ID number in our VT monitoring program in 2018, and you named her Clementine. It was fitting that she was also the first #turtle Kiley saw in 2024. Happy spring, Clementine!

Hydrology Paper of the Day The Orianne Society on characterizing the hydrology of the East Bay Flatwoods in Florida: hydrological processes of shallow and sporadically-flooded wetlands; seasonality and imperiled flatwoods salamander habitats; and LiDAR-derived stage-area curves.

The Orianne Society burn team has recently had their boots on the ground late into the night, taking advantage of calm nighttime conditions.
