Lesser Celandine (Ficaria verna) in the sunshine. Possibly OE wenwyrt, wen-'swelling', wyrt-a useful 'plant, herb', I've not yet found it in #PlaceNames but it occurs in many early remedies for inflammations, AKA pilewort! Local names incl. cheesecups, butterchops & goldy knob!

One of the first woodland flowers of the year, the Lesser Celandine, Ficaria verna is an important nectar source for queen bumblebees emerging from hibernation. Other names Brighteye, Smallwort, Figwort and Pilewort. The latter as it was believed to be a remedy for haemorrhoids!

Ficaria verna, aka lesser celandine/pilewort. It is an invasive buttercup-family flower from Europe and Western Asia that blooms in early Spring, often blanketing forest floors.
