2/? Here is the point in the game where the rom prepares the MMC3 chr-rom mapper registers. It sets 2 chr registers for the password screen sprites. The yellow line represents where the scanline currently is during the rendered frame.

3/? Since there is a huge swath of black gfx, I can easily sneak in the vram writes during the rendered frame. What i've done here, is set an IRQ to fire just below PASS WORD. You can see the scanline is now right below PASS WORD, so now I can begin my upload to the vram.

That's a really tiny ZX Spectrum. Testing downscaling with the new scanline decoding implementation that gets data directly from the Spectrum video memory, decoding on the fly and writing to the ST7735 display without CRC buffer. The performance gain is big. Also less memory.
