Steve Smith Standing In Traffic Smart Motorway Skill And the problem with The AA PR campaign (which was brilliant in hitting its own objectives of promoting its services through scaring drivers) is that the media took it as gospel.

Blaming drivers doesn’t sell products, news or services. Blaming roads is an easier PR campaign

Jon πŸ“± + 🚘 = ❌ Smart Motorway Skill Cars rarely break like they did in the 1960/70s when motorways were built. Most issues (eg: punctures) can be dealt with in refuge areas.

The AA & Sarah Champion let us down with anti lobbying.

190 mile motorway drive.
Average speed 41 mph.

So much time crawling in three packed lanes, with an empty hard shoulder closed to traffic

Stopping the programme was a short sighted populist decision. Such a simple way of freeing up capacity.

Damo! Ian Sowman Smart Motorway Skill Those same drivers are a risk on any A road, something The AA conveniently glossed over in its impactful, but misleading, PR campaign on the danger of roadside breakdowns.

I assume AA breakdown insurance is more profitable than AA driving schools or car maintenance advice ;)

James Bailey Ian Sowman Smart Motorway Skill Apart from the fact that most car drivers are too stupid to read and understand how to use smart motorways. It’s not the motorways fault, simple observation skills solve most driving issues we have in this country
