In time, it inspired a Hollywood epic, but while #TheGreatEscape (1963) is a heavily fictionalised look at the break out of Stalag Luft III, some of those involved knew something of the reality behind their portrayal...

On this day 80 years ago, former pupil Sandy Gunn took part in the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III along with 75 of his colleagues. Sadly, he was one of the men re-captured and subsequently executed by the Gestapo Spitfire AA810 #thegreatescape #cargilfieldconnected
