The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
St. Stephen's Day was caught in the furze,
Although he was little his honour was great,
Jump up me lads and give him a treat.
Up with the kettle and down with the pan,
And give us a penny to bury the wren.

Because I've enjoyed Enright's previous novels, I was disappointed I didn't like this one as much as I had hoped. See my review of by Anne Enright (New Release - ): schatjesshelves.blogspot.com/2023/11/review…

A hard book to form a definitive opinion on: while I enjoyed one main character and cared for her storyline, I did not feel the same interest in the other protagonist or her interlaced narrative. And so it goes.

I loved Anne Enright's latest novel, The Wren,The Wren, published on 31 August by Vintage Books. Dark, funny and a brilliant pastiche of “the finest love poet of his generation,” this must be her best yet.
