A farm walk, mostly hunting orchid rosettes. Blissfully unaware of the #wildflowerhour #violetchallenge got some Violet phone pics anyway as they’re gorgeous ATM. No IDs though☺️ First Bluebell flower & a Coltsfoot too.
Common Dog-violet (Viola riviniana) - interesting that the oily seeds are a favoured food of ants, the ants act as gardeners or seed dispersal agents by carrying seeds back to their colony where some are discarded & germinate, leading to violets on ant-hills. #VioletChallenge
Hairy violets (viola hirta) at Hartslock nature reserve, 23rd March 2022. #violetchallenge #wildflowerhour
“The Violet in her greenwood bower,
Where Birchen boughs with Hazels mingle,
May boast itself the fairest flower
In glen, in copse, or forest dingle.” - Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832).
