Sea Lamprey migration is also blocked by Annacotty Weir (River Mulkear). This is an ornamental weir & should be removed - or lowered & a rock ramp installed. Addressing the problems at this weir should be a priority for the Lower River Shannon SAC #WorldFishMigrationDay
Happy #WorldFishMigrationDay !
Here's to all the great work being done make rivers navigable for migrating fish like this Atlantic salmon on the River Ribble by removing old obstructions and building fish passes 👏 ❤️🐟
Salmon also have problems passing Annacotty Weir (River Mulkear - Lower River Shannon SAC). Most eventually pass but their migration is delayed, valuable energy wasted, & they are vulnerable here to predation & illegal exploitation #WorldFishMigrationDay
Each year, Pacific lamprey migrate upstream to spawn, facing a wide variety of barriers. These incredible climbers use the suction power of their oral disc to ascend, but many barriers prevent their passage. 📷:Kent Porter #WorldFishMigrationDay

This #WorldFishMigrationDay , we're celebrating suckers, a #GreatLakes migrating fish! In 2020 we saw:
🐟 34 community scientists monitoring 11 tributaries!
🐟 5700 adult suckers documented
🐟 176 of 300 previously tagged adult suckers return to the creek where they were tagged
Making the impassable, passable! Free passage for fish to migrate is vital to river health. Here we removed a weir on Black Beck, opening up new spawning ground upstream. 🐟 Thanks to the landowners and the team at Ian Cannon Ltd! #WorldFishMigrationDay
It's not easy to be a migrating #fish in these days.
There's plenty of global threats: #OverFishing #dams #hydropower #pollution #HabitatDestruction #ClimateChange ...
We need action, regulation & restoration!

Happy #WorldFishMigrationDay !!! To celebrate, some pics of my fav #fish 🐟🐟 on this day, let's remember that fish move more than we think, probably at more times of the year than most books say (fish don't read books 😉) and they NEED #freeflowingrivers ! 🏞️ #damremoval

Migratory fish are an incredibly important part of Oregon’s river ecosystems. Lamprey, which spend part of their life in freshwater filter feeding & part of their life in marine waters before migrating back to rivers to spawn, are vastly under appreciated. #WorldFishMigrationDay
#WorldFishMigrationDay The extent that #salmon are delayed at #BarriersToMigration even with passes can be staggering #Shrewsbury weir on the #Severn we have identified (by distinct features)individual fish from photo evidence. Two of those fish made attempts hourly for 4days.
