This is GREAT and is NEEDED--I don't know of any curricula on the market that calls this out for teachers... YET

And honestly WAY more valuable than all the 'chop it into syllables' activites done in K-2 classrooms right now.

Remembering this awesome time at SSSR w/this powerful group of women researchers back in July 2022!

Always great to hear about new studies, theories, & practical on the ground work in schools.

Can’t wait for International Dyslexia Association’s Annual Conference this Oct!

Worthy read. Teach comprehension within subjects with informational text and teach how to find the meaning this way. Great idea on library collection development to support specific grades with appropriate text ~ like comprehension mentor texts for specific subjects.

Christopher Such I was most influenced by this study by Williams et al. (2016) when designing my study. It showed positive effects on comprehension when teaching text structure vs. a content only approach and a BAU control.

Christopher Such I conducted an experimental study comparing two approaches that both involved meaningful engagement with the same texts under same conditions. I found benefits on proximal measures when instruction focused on text structure vs. question answering.

I especially appreciate Tiffany Peltier, Ph.D.🌸’s focus on the highest-leverage comprehension strategies. 👏

And the way she reinforces that students should be using these strategies in service of knowledge acquisition…. Not in service of using-strategies-for-their-own-sake:
