Kerryn Little PyroLife_ITN Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System .Kerryn Little discussing at #EGU24 how we may use synoptic climatology to provide a longer term assessments of European fire danger
Looking forwards to #EGU24 next week. 5 talks and 2 posters (including 4 highlights) led by amazing researchers and partners as part of Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System Irish Peatland Resilience PyroLife_ITN and others.
As we begin to move into the 2024 wildfire season, here are some of the headline results collected last year by the amazing #TheGreatFuelMoistureSurvey volunteers
End of an era! Packing up all 36 fuel moisture monitoring plots on the North York Moors. Thank you to the Estates and individuals involved in making such an extensive landscape scale fuel moisture campaign possible. Look out for our results ๐ #firedanger #fireweather #fmc
Thanks to BBC Weekend News @ 10 BBC News (UK) Clive Myrie for reporting wildfire activity globally in 2023. Rebecca Murrell Science Editor summarises key trends including insights from Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System team Stefan Doerr and Dr. Gail Millin-Chalabi Manchester Geography
Thanks to BBC Radio 5 Live for inviting me to discuss wildfires in Canada and global wildfire trends on the Saturday Breakfast show Dr. Gail Millin-Chalabi Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System UoM News Manchester Geography
๐ฅFieldwork๐ฅ Pia Labenski & Johannes Senn โ are currently working in the Peak District (up North in England), collecting data on vegetation recovery ๐ฟ after wildfires. An exciting collaboration with Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System to monitor fuel dynamics in moorlands. #WildfireResearch #blueberries
Thanks to BBC Scotland for the opportunity to discuss wildfire risk in the UK on behalf of the Toward a UK Fire Danger Rating System UoM News on The Sunday Show today. To watch the interview please visit bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00โฆ
The article refers to Tom's work with the Natural Environment Research Council-funded UK Fire Danger Rating System project (@UKFDRS) which is working to build a new system to help predict how wildfires behave in the UK ๐ฌ๐ง.
But more than that, it has been amazing to see the notes, discussions and enjoyment of the sampling by people. Results coming out here soon, but for now a massive THANK YOU!
#TheGreatFuelMoistureSurvey
Absolutely blown away by the #TheGreatFuelMoistureSurvey volunteers. 750 samples and counting of fuel moisture from right across the UK. 55% taken on a single day and ~80% within a two day period of high fire danger last week.
Our NNR team were out collecting heather samples at #HolmeFen last week for the #GreatFuelMoistureSurvey ; a scientific project to develop better wildfire predictions. Learn more about this Natural Environment Research Council Uni of Birmingham project here:
