Always use a firm, flat mattress for your baby. It helps to reduce the risk of overheating because it doesn’t mould and hug around your baby as much. It also means that if your baby ends up rolling onto their stomach, the mattress is less likely to restrict their airway.

Whilst many parents will hang a blanket over their baby’s pram or buggy to protect them from the sun, we advise against it. This is because it reduces airflow around your baby and can cause overheating. Instead, we recommend using a clip-on sunshade or parasol.

SLEEPING BAGS – Baby sleep bags are a good alternative to using blankets. The “tog” of the sleeping bag tells you how much heat will be kept inside – the higher the tog, the warmer baby will get. Check manufacturers guidelines on how to tell if the bag fits well.
