Very interesting perspective here. Bit less true in the UK perhaps? Or just as much? Much less true in France I’m pretty sure, v. different publishing scene and very conservative curricula.

This essay is such a breath of fresh air. An example of Eugenio Montale’s “superior dilettantism”. Suffused with an air of intellectual freedom, that stems from a disinterested pleasure in simply *reading poetry* – and talent for intelligent, reasonable and fair evaluation.

Fascinating and honest read (link to it in Victoria's bio) reviewing the latest Poetry Review. As a reader I've almost always felt alienated from most of the mainstream poetry magazines. I'd always thought I was the whole root of the problem, so it's interesting to read this.

Having a third baby in France was fascinating from this point of view. So much less pressure to breastfeed. Quite a lot of (well-meaning) ignorance about what breastfeeding actually involves in the early days, even from e.g. midwives and nurses in special care.

Happened to be teaching this today and thought I'd share as it's #PoetryDayIRL . Such a perfect example of a sonnet. My favourite poetic form. For me it's a little firework display of techniques. Amazing what Heaney achieves here in 14 lines.
