With school closure debates coming to a school district near you, we absolutely must make student and academic outcomes our North Star.

My please to the Columbus school board from tonight's board meeting.

Excellent and very fair piece! What makes academia special is a deep and passionate commitment to skepticism and willingness to poke holes in everything.

Bad things happen when researchers become true believers and advocates and start drinking their own kool-aid.

School district budgets catch long COVID “Finally, leaders must come clean to parents and the public — both about the financial challenges their districts now face and about having squandered federal aid to backfill deficits and put off painful decisions.” thehill.com/opinion/educat…

American schools are headed for a painful fiscal cliff, write Michael Hartney and colleague Vladimir Kogan. Federal pandemic relief aid for US schools that were used to pay salaries of existing employees and support new hires is now drying up. Read more: thehill.com/opinion/educat…

My new piece with Michael Hartney on coming education budget crisis!

'The bottom line: No one is coming to rescue America’s schools from the unintended consequences of the American Rescue Plan.'

Glad this is out, making 2 points:

(1) Columbus has WAY too many schools, given its student enrollment.

(2) WHICH schools are closed is key (for students). Very disturbing that academic considerations appear to be getting zero weight in current process.

Opponents of private school vouchers often discuss role of private schools in 'Massive Resistance' to integration.

Supporters like to note anti-immigrant, anti-Catholic origins of voucher bans ('Blaine amendments').

Both great political talking points, neither very relevant.

Devastating, and right on point. The ideological capture of many scholarly organizations is sad.

The way scholars best promote social justice is doing good research to inform policy. But there is a huge difference from good research and providing cover for political advocacy.

Mandatory DEI statements are ideological pledges of allegiance. Time to abandon them. Harvard Law School Prof Randy Kennedy makes the case in The Harvard Crimson series with Council on Academic Freedom at Harvard thecrimson.com/column/council…

Looking forward to this series on teacher evals by Tim Daly!

Important lessons, cautionary tales coming no doubt. I see much similar (over)hype regarding student surveys today...
