With scoping talks announced this week, here's a few thoughts on what a 'JAUKUS' could entail for Japan, and some of the obstacles to bear in mind for the other members.

Downgrading the prestige of our official buildings is the last thing Britain should be doing. Imagine the French having this conversation?! In 9/10 cases it adds to our influence, not detracts. No reason for our history to impede our agility or effectiveness as a 21st C power.

AUKUS and the Quad aren’t comparable. I would submit that AUKUS and GCAP are two very different types of minilaterals compared to other minilaterals. In my latest co-authored piece (link to come shortly) we argue these are more than just tech accelerators:
