Three Earth and Environment at Leeds researchers, Dr Will Homoky, Alastair Lough and Chiara Krewer, recently returned from a two-month expedition to the Antarctic to examine the role the cold polar seas play in removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere 🌊
Here’s a short video charting their experience 👇
We made many first of their kind measurements on our #AntarcticPICCOLO expedition. Thanks for welcoming me back to share stories on the red sofa Amanda Harper BBC

We want to sample the environment underneath sea ice, so we are searching for a new office space this morning..

First ever Weddell seal tagged with a CTD including oxygen sensor?
Slowly heading further south and hopefully picking up more seals.

As night fell, calm pools glowed pink between the ice, and the moon rose.

A dawn blizzard through Lemaire Channel and we’ve just crossed the line of the Antarctic Polar Circle! Oceanographer’s love stamp-collecting their lats & longs. This is 66.7S 🤩

Sun down and sun up CTDs.
Breaking frazil ice at dawn with trace metal buddies. Great end to an intense period of work at shelf edge.

A mirror-lake morning in the Weddell Sea. ‘MAMMOTH’ net slowly sieve and lift up the organic carbon from beneath us.
