Since Yakisugiita, Shousugiban, is a topic again. 99% of what I see used commercially today is incorrectly treated, with the charred layer 1mm or less! You want at least 3mm, on thicker than usual boards. And it has to be done in the 'triangle' way (left), not burner (right).

Small footprint, 80mยฒ, with say a 160mยฒ part in a shared courtyard in the back. Houses 10-12 people and leaves the ground floor for businesses, shops, offices. Students and young couples in the attic rooms. Can be built in any material: RC, timber, brick, rammed earth, etc.

He is discovering the adhesive qualities of camembert. In the 19th century cheese was used to make a very strong glue-like mortar.

There's always a workaround with brick and stone. I'd have added a relieving arch above the stone lintel. 'Suspenders and belt' style.

A stately neighborhood in Bibracte (basically a town still mostly in the Iron Age), 1st century A.D. Gaul. Julius Caesar stayed here during the winter of 52-51 B.C. and wrote his Commentaries on the Gallic War. Roman style chimneys still rare. Illustration by Jean-Claude Golvin.

Perhaps the most eye-catching and the most beloved element of classical architecture is the column, and of the column, the capital. Interestingly it is also the part that has been most fruitfully adapted to local usages throughout the ages, all the way to our days. Let's explore.

Life off-grid, but in the city: buy what you need for the day at the local market (within walking distance), cook seasonal local foods with only bamboo charcoal as a fuel. No refrigerator, no gas or electricity. Healthy for you and the planet. Photo examples from Kazariya, Kyoto.

Far less destructive of both the towns it passes through and the land it passes over, the railway is the best way to connect towns and to transport both people and goods.

There are traveler reports going back to the 17th century mentioning how peculiar and functional the gangizukuri was, many reported on coming up to almost buried cities, stretching for miles along the highway, but once a tunnel had been located through the snow they found aโ€ฆ

This was an excellent talk about why modernist architecture is so bad, but at around 36:00 Stephen slams us with a wonderfully lucid and realistic definition of why modern life is absolutely crushing young people that us pre-Internet generations can hardly begin to understand.

I detest the phrase 'I don't know [anything/much/a lot] about architecture.' Unless you were raised by wolves you know enough to both have an opinion and to have an interest. And your opinion is valid even if you can't easily make the case for those thoughts and feelings.
