New season of Knight First Amendment Institute’s podcast explores the free speech fallout of the war in Israel and Gaza. In this first episode of War & Speech, I talk to Genevieve Lakier about whether the First Amendment is failing us. Eager to hear reactions! knightcolumbia.org/blog/war-speech
This is the BEST analysis on the proposed Tik Tok ban that I have read. Meredith Whittaker reminds us of something we desperately need to remember amidst rising authoritarianism around the world—we must be weary of ALL attempts to centralize power—in both corporations & nation states.
Panel speakers include: Kate Andrias Columbia Law School, Frank LoMonte CNN UGA School of Law, Daniel Walters Texas A&M School of Law, & Teague Paterson AFSCME. Moderator: Ramya Krishnan Knight First Amendment Institute.
🗓️ Next Friday 4/5, we’ll be discussing political conflict in the public sector—from #whistleblowing to #unionizing ! Join us for Panel 1: Duty & Dissent: Public Employee Speech Rights and Their Limits of our April 5 symposium. RSVP here: knightcolumbia.org/events/permiss…
Earlier today, a federal district court dismissed the lawsuit that X Corp. filed against Center for Countering Digital Hate.
X Corp. argued that it was trying to protect its users, but the suit was a transparent attack on the company's critics and on independent researchers.

On today's Lawfare Podcast, Alan Rozenshtein and Matt Perault spoke to Ramya Krishnan about the bill requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban, First Amd implications of a ban, whether it's a good idea, and more for a new ep of Arbiters of Truth. lawfaremedia.org/article/the-la…
Today, Knight First Amendment Institute, Freedom of the Press, Human Rights Watch, Committee to Protect Journalists, Freedom House & RSF in English sent a letter to President Biden urging his admin to do more to protect journalists’ ability to safely and freely report on the Israel-Gaza war. Read the letter: #pressfreedom knightcolumbia.org/documents/f5d8…
Loved joining Quinta Jurecic and the Lawfare podcast for this conversation with First Amendment experts Mary-Rose Papandrea and Ramya Krishnan about recent rulings on state TikTok restrictions.
If the 1A protects anything, it protects against gvt pressure to censor protected speech. Those that insist on this in the context of social media seem to have forgotten it lately.
w/ Genevieve Lakier , bc not enough has been written abt the Uni Pres.:

Incredible reporting from Clarissa Ward, showing the reality inside of Gaza. Worth a watch if you get a moment. There are also journalists inside Gaza that have been continuously reporting on what’s happening there, many have died in the process.
Incredibly good piece by Anthony O'Rourke and Wadie Said in Dissent Magazine that I really hope everyone will read: 'Terrorism Investigations on Campus and the New McCarthyism.' Substantive legal and historical detail here, as well as intelligent political analysis dissentmagazine.org/online_article…
