It is with great sadness that AILG has learned of the passing of Cllr. Gerard Murphy. One of the longest serving public representatives in Cork County Council, Cllr. Murphy was a dedicated public representative for his local community. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

🎉Celebrating 125 Years of County Council Elections in Ireland. Today marks 125 years since Irish people first elected #Councillors to shape #localdemocracy . County Councils paved the way for democratic practices in Irish life twenty years before Dáil Éireann & the Seanad.

Today marks the 125th anniversary of the first County Council elections in Ireland on 6th April 1899. This was the first time that Irish people had the opportunity to vote for their local government representation. This also marked the first time that women voted.

Today Minister Darragh O'Brien has made orders appointing Friday, 7 June 2024 as the polling day and the hours of 7:00am to 10:00pm to be the hours of polling at the European Parliament, local and Limerick mayoral elections.
