How much does an LM depend on information provided in-context vs its prior knowledge?

Check out how Vésteinn Snæbjarnarson, Niklas Stoehr, Jennifer White, Aaron Schein, Ryan David Cotterell + I answer this by measuring a *context's persuasiveness* and an *entity's susceptibility*🧵

Does this make LLMs biased? Idk maybe. But here's our new paper on when PageRank (dev by Larry Page and Sergey Brin) and other ranking algs are indeed biased! ➡️arxiv.org/abs/2402.13787

Accepted at The Web Conference'24, who else is joining in Singapore this May?

I spoke at a pro-peace vigil in San Francisco where people from diverse backgrounds, including Israelis, Palestinians & Arabs shared their perspectives & grievances. The goal was to listen to one another & seek common ground across our disagreements to promote a new path forward.

If you want a respite from OpenAI drama, how about joining academia?

I'm starting Conceptualization Lab, recruiting PhDs & Postdocs!

We need new abstractions to understand LLMs. Conceptualization is the act of building abstractions to see something new.

Excited to reunite with everyone at
next month! Don't forget to check out our workshop I Can't Believe It's Not Better! on the failure modes of foundation models: shorturl.at/qrtJM (Looks like we added one more foundation model failure mode after last weekend!) 🤓

Some of you guys who i like very much are quote-tweeting completely unverified news sources about an active conflict as if it’s verified fact, and it’s driving me completely nuts. Anyone can write “breaking news” at the front of a tweet - lots of random people are doing it!

My father’s family is Irish-American. He’d tell me it wasn’t the Irish ppl who unequivocally supported the Provisional IRA’s violence but the Irish-Americans in Boston, NYC, etc cheering for bloodshed from a safe distance. They’d little skin in the game & played it like sport. 4/

I have said this over and over again but it still boggles my mind: The far left and far right seem wholly set on conflating Hamas and Palestinians. The former then do atrocity denial and cheer on a monstrous terrorist group as “freedom fighters.” It’s truly amazing. 1/

I’m hitting the job market looking mainly for tenure-track asst. professor positions (2024)! 🚨👨‍🔬

My core research informs how we should curate content on online platforms — and I’m also interested in how large language models will impact on the Web in the upcoming years.

For one second compare the clear tone of Standing Together, a massive movement including both Palestinian and Jewish citizens of Israel, with statements from leftist orgs in the West
