#OnThisDay in 1984, #London ’s tidal flood defence was officially opened

It was operational for 18 months prior to this, and thanks to the work of our engineering team, should continue operating until 2070 - 40 years more than originally thought

Early in the morning of Wednesday 8 May 2024 a flotilla of #narrowboats will pass through the Thames Barrier, joining its 40th anniversary celebrations.

Later they will return and proceed upriver to take the #FundBritainsWaterways message to #Westminster , arriving from 12.15pm

There's a test closure of the #ThamesBarrier tomorrow, on the 40th anniversary of the official opening.

This will be earlier than normal test closures, with gates starting to move at around 07.55, and they'll be fully open by 10.25.

⚠️ Spring tides upon us again this week - I've issued our Flood Alert for the tidal #Thames from #Putney to #Teddington for this afternoon's high tide.

Likely to be in force for the rest of the week.

No property flooding expected.

We’re well into cruise ship season at the #ThamesBarrier .

Viking Sky makes her to Greenwich at the end of her latest trip and the first of three visits to #London this year, with two booked for July.
