It’s more than 40 years old, but I still find the #ThamesBarrier one of the most stunning, forward-looking structures in the capital. When lit at night it's straight out of a sci-fi movie.

Now the #ThamesBarrier test closure is complete (see yesterday’s tweet) some of the gates are in their reverse maintenance position. The gates are hollow so can be inspected inside when out of the water. And as a bonus some of the Dunkirk small boats chugged through today!
I’d not been to Thames Barrier for yonks before yesterday and had great fun taking photos with the zoom lens. This is my new favourite

70 years ago, on this night in 1953, a devasting storm tide hit our eastern coastline, taking numerous lives & causing huge damage to homes, farms & industry. In response, seawalls & huge defences like the #ThamesBarrier now line the #ThamesEstuary , providing protection, for now.
