Thanks to the charming Bridi Rice for giving me an airing on her great podcast to discuss my Australian Foreign Affairs piece calling on Australia to apply some of the logic of European integration to its Pacific policy.
Bridi calls it ‘bold’ which is diplomatic speak for sticking my neck out!
Will AUKUS enhance or undermine our security? And will we ever get those submarines?
Tomorrow, 11AM AEDT, join our webinar w/ Prof Hugh White & Dr Emma Shortis for an in-depth discussion following Prof White's essay in Australian Foreign Affairs.

I'm in the latest Australian Foreign Affairs Affairs on AUKUS. The TLDR (though you should) version is that there is a sound operational logic behind SSNs for Oz, but the costs and risks probably outweigh that. I worry that come 2032-odd we'll be running out of submarine capability altogether.
In my new Australian Foreign Affairs essay I assess that Australia’s post-AUKUS diplomacy with Southeast Asia has been moderately successful. Yet AUKUS shows that genuine disagreement with the region about how to maintain security will be a long term challenge. australianforeignaffairs.com/afa/widening-t…
In the new issue of Australian Foreign Affairs #AP4D Advisory Group's Susannah Patton says the 'onus [is] on 🇦🇺to initiate & lead a much deeper dialogue with Southeast Asian countries about the security choices it is making' given regional countries' views of #AUKUS .
