The cost of natural history books can be a barrier for naturalists, which is why NNNS teamed up with the Ted Ellis Trust to put together a research library (which is held at Wheatfen). If there are any field guides or ID books you think we should have then let us know

A new colonist has appeared on the pantiles of the outhouse roof. The darker thalli belong to Buellia aethalea (Catillaria atomarioides is also present on the tiles). What are the little colonists with paler thallus?

It looks as if this monument was buried for so long thart it's lichens all died. Ivy and bramble may be good for some wildlife but lichens can't survive in their shade.

This iconic flora sold throughout Northern Europe. Sadly we decided not to reprint again once work on the third edition started. All but two large families and a few small genera have now been rewritten. See britishlichensociety.org.uk/identification…

These fantastic woodland sites are unique even amongst temperate rainforests. In the SW the higher temperatures reached in summer, results in a slightly different suite of lichen species compared to the more northern UK rainforests.

Pinheads are tricky to photograph. This great photo clearly shows both why they're called pinheads and the underlying crustose thallus.

Some surfaces are definitely easier for lichens to set up home on. It doesnt seem to be the paint that's important here but the textured surfaces.

Lovely resources for children. More on lichens in churchyards can be found on the Caring for God's Acre website. Including 3 videos with April Windle. caringforgodsacre.org.uk/resources/film…

People often remember that Normandina pulchella grows with mosses. But, in fact, it likes liverworts too. It's a species that benefits from the extra water that bryophytes trap and hold near the bark surface.
