This morning, two of our trustees handed the open letter and petition totalling a whopping 10,239 signatures to the reception at the Department of Biology.

First – we can see this is something our supporters care about.

96% of respondents were ‘quite’ or ‘very’ motivated to respond to a consultation on Badger culling. And 97% want to see a reduction in Bovine Tuberculosis in Badgers, other wildlife and cattle. 2/6

BUT – feedback suggests people would find the consultation difficult to complete.

96% of respondents said their overall impression of the consultation was that it looks ‘very’ or ‘quite’ difficult. 3/6

To test the clarity of the advice document provided by Defra, we also asked our supporters to identify the pages where Defra’s ‘stated objective’ for the proposed Badger cull appeared.

The results seem to say it’s not clear at all… 4/6

We think this shows Defra’s consultation isn’t easily understandable, nor does it represent a fair series of questions that could be answered by a motivated member of the public.

Half the respondents couldn’t find the ‘stated objective’ referred to by Defra.

The other half identified all but two pages (2 & 9) of Defra’s doc as being the location of the ‘stated objective’ i.e. pages 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,10,11,12,13,14,15,16 and 17.

The Conservative Govt wants to shoot more and more wild badgers at night from distance causing prolonged suffering and agony for this iconic species.

The badger cull is senseless and flies in the face of science. It must end.

Shooting more and more badgers dead is not the solution to tackling the spread of tBT in cattle.

The dairy industry needs to fix its bio security, stop moving infected dairy cows around the country, and work to stop cattle-to-cattle transmission – not demonise badgers.
