Tomorrow, is World Curlew Day. The BallydanganBog has had great success . Passionate volunteers, community engagement, suitable habitat, and predator control are key.

“Why would a Lions Club get involved in peatland restoration? We were starting from zero.

Well our motto is - we serve.”

Inspirational stuff from Michael Carroll.

Why carry out a wetland survey?

🔘 Document locations
🔘 Give conservational value
🔘 Promote awareness

Great start to today’s Community Wetlands Forum event with Biodiversity Officer Barry O’Loughlin.

How is our culture diminished when we lose species from our land & how can these lost connections be re-enlivened?

In 2022 my wife Michelle & I made a radio doc, 'Calling the Curlew Home', asking this. It's full of songs & stories & is re-broadcast Sunday @ 6pm on RTÉ Lyric FM

Yesterday, two groups of brilliant 1st Years from Ardscoil Mhuire joined us at BallydanganBog. Pat Feehily explained how they are conserving the Red Grouse on the bog, and then the FarmPEAT team invited the students to investigate bog plants plus test out our peatland scorecard.

Like most clubs this time of year, the importance of keeping feeders out and full will benefit more than game birds. Here, we have some being put out in the Midlands.

Thank you to Camcloon NS for a fun morning learning about bogs by playing our version of 'Guess Who?' and building a peatland food web! We talked about how plants, animals, and human activities are interwoven and affected by each other.
