On this day in 1961, Fidel Castro delivered a speech to honour the Cubans killed the day before in an attack that paved the way for the Bay of Pigs invasion.

In it, he declared the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution for the first time.

On this day in 1961, air strikes were launched against Cuban airfields. These strikes aimed to eliminate the possibility of an effective defence against the impending US-backed invasion at the Bay of Pigs.

The assault killed seven Cubans and destroyed two planes.
