Preliminary 2022 ODA data shows a threefold increase in in-donor refugee costs. Why are some DAC members reporting refugee costs in their own countries as ODA? I address this question in my recent contribution to the OECD Development Matters Blog: oe.cd/500.

This year Slovak Republic celebrates 10 years as a DAC member. In Bratislava this Tuesday, I had meetings with senior officials and members of Parliament to discuss development co-operation – and the need to increase ODA at this critical juncture. See more bit.ly/carstenstaur

In 2022 in-donor refugee costs increased substantially – a direct consequence of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine. At the same time, assistance to LDC’s, many faced with multiple crisis, decreased. We need to ringfence long-term ODA and meet new demands with additional funding.

Launching 2022 ODA data: Despite growing economic and political pressures, DAC donors increased #ODA to the highest level in forty years, also responding to consequences of Russia’s attack on Ukraine. Signals a strong political commitment to development assistance.

Delighted to Chair my first DAC meeting today alongside DCD Director, Pilar Garrido. Many challenges and opportunities lie ahead.
