These young adults have a right to protest peacefully. DPS needs to be recalled before someone gets seriously injured. The Governor should respect the First Amendment.

For those wondering who will pick up the mess on UT Austin’s main quad: Students are cleaning it up. As soon as the police line was pushed back, students immediately got to work cleaning up their campus.

NEW: UT Austin released 'protest rules' that say 'individuals may not come to campus without authorization,' which is in direct contradiction to a video they published 6 months ago that says members of the public can 'come to campus at any time and engage in demonstrations.'

BREAKING: UT President Jay Hartzell’s messages with a state senator and the UT System Chancellor reveal he requested additional help from DPS at yesterday’s protest because “our police force couldn’t do it alone,” according to messages obtained by The Austin American-Statesman.

After the police left, the students reclaimed their campus and gathered together for the planned peaceful teach-in. The massive police presence and arrest of dozens of students was so unnecessary.

Not once did UT use their campus intercom system while I was there. A student went on a literal stabbing spree in 2017, and all we got was an emergency text about “criminal activity” 30 mins later.

well i guess speech ended up winning the day at UT Austin. we kindly ask you to please free those arrested, without charges.

I covered UT Austin as a journalist for 5 years (including 3 as a student) and I never have seen them use the campuswide intercom or mailing list like this.
