.Jake Johnston on Al Jazeera English right now:

While is framed as a public health law, in effect, it is a backend way to enforce the draconian and racist immigration policy of the Trump administration.

The reality is that President Biden continues to do that.

.Jake Johnston on :
The mistreatment of Haitians is a historical reality and the tip of the spear of creating our modern carceral immigration system.

Detention centers the US holds migrants in started as a response to a wave of Haitian migration over 40 years ago.

The US is pushing a military intervention in Haiti because the situation on the ground is so dire, yet at the same time is taking steps to ensure that Haitian asylum seekers cannot make it to the US and will be returned to Haiti 'as quickly as possible.'

Makes sense.

The Department of State is already in discussions to determine the composition and mandate of a multinational force to be sent to Haiti.

Latest on Haiti Watch Blog looks at the calls for intervention and asks the question, security for whom?

The congressionally-mandated Department of State report on last year's assassination of Haiti's president was due more than 6 weeks ago. It has yet to clear an inter-agency review. Wouldn't be surprised if this requirement is causing some headaches at various three letter agencies.

What if it's actually those rushing toward elections that can't win in a 'free and fair' environment, benefit from the status quo, and are seeking to ensure its continuation through (another) low turnout, poorly organized vote?

If Haiti's minimum wage for export factories had kept pace with inflation since 1990, it would be over 1,350 gourdes today -- much closer to what workers are demanding than to what the government announced yesterday.

This is an appalling extension of a cruel Stephen Miller policy with no basis in public health.

The Biden Administration must end its use of the Trump-era Title 42 policy

The Biden admin keeps saying it has learned lessons, won’t pick winners, and will allow a “Haitian solution” — but the US just can’t quit playing master. It’s not up to US to determine what is or is not legal or constitutional. Statements like these serve as clear interference.

12 years of USAID spending in Haiti: just 3 percent went directly to local organizations.

Though there have been many pledges to do better, of the first $50 million awarded after the 2021 quake, nothing went directly to local groups.

Why?
