I am generally agnostic about the annual onslaught of literary awards, but this one is typically an exception. Any one of these books would be a worthy winner. I recommend them all (and their excellent publishers)!

'It is important to remember that in programs of political resistance the relation of cause and effect is convoluted and often indirect. All struggle has a global resonance. If not here, then there. If not now, then soon. Elsewhere as well as here'.

Four of the films I've watched recently had credits for a dog: The Eternal Daughter, Anatomy of A Fall, The Old Oak and tonight, Aki KaurismΓ€ki's Fallen Leaves.
I'd have to give Snoop/Messi the award for best performance but I shed a few tears when Marra/Lola died in The Old Oak.

What an extraordinary, touching and generous exchange between Rita Dove and the dying Helen Vendler, a great critic whose loss we mourn.
