THREAD: Did you know that 87% of those paying for prison communication are WOMEN, and disproportionately Black and brown women?
Governor Kathy Hochul, we know gender equity is important to you, can the women of New York depend on you to make prison communication free in this budget?
PSA: There’s a tuition-free Bard MicroCollege inside the Brooklyn Public Library at Grand Army Plaza & ADMISSIONS ARE NOW OPEN!
Thanks you Hannah Kliger & CBS New York for covering this amazing story. cbsloc.al/43HjK0G
🚨 Urgent Call to #CloseRikers ! 🚨
As part of NYC Jails Action Coalition (JAC), we've witnessed the injustices at Rikers Island. NYC operates the most over-staffed and over-funded jail system in the country. Yet, conditions remain dire—lack of basic necessities, excessive force, and lives lost. 🧵
People released from incarceration are a staggering 42X more likely to die from overdose in the 2 weeks following their release when compared to the general population. Visit treatmentnotjail.com/take-action to urge our legislators to PASS TreatmentNotJailNY to do something about this & SAVE LIVES.
'We are now starting to make real, concrete changes in ways that we treat our human beings in our prisons and jails.' —Victor Pate, #HALTsolitary — Go to bit.ly/EndSolitaryNY's #HALTsolitary Co-Director and a survivor of solitary confinement, deemed torture by the UN.
New York City rejects such harmful practices.
STATEMENT: In response to the hate-based attack of a Bronx man on live television by the Guardian Angels, we released the following statement along w/ NY Working Families Party, VOCAL-NY, CUFFH and New York Communities for Change:
'We’re horrified by the vigilante assault of a Bronx resident live on Fox News.'
📰🧵ICYMI: #NoPriceOnJustice made headlines across the state this week after our advocacy day to end predatory court fines and fees! “Every dollar we spend on these fees is one less dollar we have to support our families.' - @cca_ny member Peggy Herrera queenseagle.com/all/2024/2/6/c…
NYC made history by banning solitary confinement—a win for public safety that makes jails and New Yorkers on both sides of the bars safer.
Hear why the isolation of solitary is an inhumane, immoral injustice that never belonged in our city: Bit.ly/SolitaryNYC

Everyone at SWASC is thrilled that the New York City Council voted to override the mayor's veto of Intro 549 to #endsolitaryconfinement in NYC jails.
Shout out to NYC Jails Action Coalition (JAC) and all of the other advocates' hard work that got us here!
Solitary confinement is torture. Yesterday, at long, long last, we ended it in New York City.
New York City Council
Today, the Council voted to override the mayor’s veto of Int. 586-A of the #HowManyStopsAct to require reporting of basic data on Level 1 and 2 investigative stops.
Transparency is critical to community trust and delivering safety for all New Yorkers.
