In Birmingham, life expectancy has dropped by nearly 2 years in just 3 years. In parts of Blackpool, men's life expectancy is just two years above retirement age.

As part of Alcohol Health Alliance UK we’re calling for a joined up strategy to tackle Alcohol. We’re also calling for much earlier detection of liver disease so that people still have time for the damage to be reversed if they stop drinking.

Yesterday I spoke in a debate on liver disease & cancer to call for Government to finally address the avoidable deaths that this causes every year. The North East is at the sharp end of this national crisis. We cannot afford for this to continue. My speech⬇️

Liver cancer is the fastest rising cause of cancer death in the UK, with a five-year survival rate of just 13%.

The Labour Party has a fully costed plan to double the number of MRI and CT scanners so we can catch illness earlier and treat it faster.

A big thank you to Nicola and Luke, who took on the Manchester Marathon together, raising over £2,500.

They ran in memory of Luke's mother and Nicola's friend, Jo, who sadly passed away in July.

1 in 4 children with obesity are estimated to have fatty liver disease, which increases the risk of premature death.

Over 17,000 people die of liver disease and liver cancer each year, at a huge cost to the NHS and the economy.

It's an avoidable epidemic that is driven by obesity, alcohol, and viral hepatitis. 90% of liver disease is preventable and if diagnosed early, damage can be reversed.

Children should have an alcohol-free childhood. We need to put levers in place to address escalating alcohol harm by improving awareness and support, introducing stronger controls on alcohol advertising and stronger taxation measures.
