Roughly 4.5 million people live in an ambulance desert, defined as an area where a dispatch station is at least 25 miles away, according to a report published in May by Maine Rural Health Research Center.

Across the 41 states included in these analyses, 4.5 million people lived in an ambulance desert in 2021-2022. Of the 4.5 million living in ADs, 2.3 million lived in rural counties.
