It is amazing how different the same archaeological site can look on #satelliteimagery and on the ground. Features that are visible from space are hardly noticeable on the ground and visa-versa. Have a look at some examples from the N-W coast of Egypt here.

A WW2 Catalina floatplane, demilitarised for private use, lies abandoned on the shore in northwest #SaudiArabia . Now a tourist attraction, #GoogleEarth #satelliteimages show its degradation over time: since 2013 the tail section has broken off and moved further up the beach.

Disan Island, one of the #Farasan islands in the southern #RedSea , is now uninhabited but was not always so. #SatelliteImagery shows a former settlement which, based on historic navigational instructions, was abandoned sometime in the 19th century. #CoastalArchaeology
Shallow reefs and rocks have long been shipping hazards. #GordonReef ( #RedSea ) is no exception, famous for the 1981 #shipwreck Louilla. But historic pilotage instructions say that an earlier steamship was also wrecked in roughly the same place in 1896…could there be more?
Major infrastructure can be built really quickly. This #Sentinel2 #GoogleEarthEngine timelapse shows a new highway around Lake Mareotis, (Egypt) that encroaches on/cuts across documented archaeological sites (red), e.g the ancient harbour of Taposiris Magna.
Even large shallow water #shipwrecks can be hard to spot from #SatelliteImagery . This one, ( #Farasan Islands, southern #RedSea ), poss. a late 19th/early 20th C. steamer, shows how detection depends on weather conditions at time of image acquisition. It’s not impossible though!
