Happy 100th birthday to the Shipping Forecast!
First broadcast on New Year's Day 1924
My initial Met Office training included a day with the forecaster preparing the Shipping Forecast. It felt quite special to hear him rehearse aloud carefully-worded drafts to get it just right
Whilst we were in Canada, Brynn Forness was our Captain for the Day. The family very kindly gave us a bottle of Shackleton Whisky and we promised we would take it to South Georgia and toast the man himself. We got alongside today and made good on that promise! Dani Forness
LS(AWW) Bell was an object of curiosity for this brave little Penguin who approached him as he took a break from shovelling snow to help out our friends UK Antarctic Heritage Trust at Port Lockroy
It’s a swap! A picture of the current HMS Protector A173, for a picture of our predecessor A146, taken in 1960 and presented to Elena Hughes and her father after a trip in the whaler from Montevideo to Punta del Este! What a fabulous afternoon!
The Atlantic Future Forum on board the UK’s Aircraft Carrier HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH. The Band of His Majesty’s Royal Marines flash-mobbing Grand Central Station (spontaneous, but carefully planned). What a spectacular week! HMS Queen Elizabeth First Sea Lord
#merchantnavyday today and thanking the thousands of #seafarers that keep our island nation afloat. 90% of our goods arrive into the UK by sea, without merchant seafarers the UK would grind to a halt.
Our crew and 24 Commando Royal Engineers 59 Commando Squadron RE lending their engineering expertise to Governor's Office Montserrat at the Cultural Centre yesterday… and getting a little help! 🔨👷♂️
Our crew spent a rewarding day working together with University of Exeter and Marine Conservation Society scientists this week. With the use of our seaboat, we were able to assist in their #conservation efforts to safeguard the 🐢 population in #Montserrat 🇲🇸
Our embarked 24 Commando Royal Engineers 59 Commando Squadron RE engineers have been working with Governor's Office Montserrat 🇲🇸 on a #HADR landing and comms test. We’ll be visiting places around the island over the next week - say hello 👋 if you see us!
We have had a great time in HMS Protector with our Honorary Captain for the Day, Brynn Forness, who along with her parents, came all the way from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. We finished the day at the Royal NS Tattoo where we both joined in the salute. UK in Canada 🇬🇧🇨🇦 Dani Forness
Super excited to catch up with Cdr Maude Ouellet-Savard RCN in Halifax last night; she flew 5,500km from B.C. for 9 hours here! We worked together for 2 years teaching Navigation at FOST but it is the first time we have seen each other in person for 9 years! UK in Canada 🇬🇧🇨🇦
.@HMSProtector – the Royal Navy's Ice Patrol Ship arrives in #Halifax for the first time on a port visit during its Eastern Canadian tour. Welcome! #ProtectorInCanada 🇬🇧⚓️🇨🇦 #PartnersAlliesFriends
