Very excited to speak at Kairos tomorrow night on an emerging inquiry for me: What do insights from spaces dedicating to healing collective and inter-generational trauma tell us about how we should produce, and consume, our news?

You might've already seen this -a funny wry title, referencing the excruciating exchange between Sultan Al-Jaber+fmr Irish president+president of The Elders, Mary Robinson. “I am the man in charge and it is wrong, ma’am. You need to listen to me, please.”

I've been genuinely shocked to see how the UK government is effectively rewriting the principles that have governed the courts for centuries because it doesn't like the fact that juries often acquit climate protesters. The authoritarian ratchet is turning another notch.

One of the world's biggest PR firms staked its reputation on climate action.

Then it took a huge contract with Shell.

I worked with a great team on this DeSmog story, including Dana Drugmand Emily J Gertz Matthew Green Ali Lyon and Isobel Moseley

The IPCC has said it is “unequivocal” that greenhouse gas emissions produced by humans have caused “unprecedented” global warming

Why is Sky News Kay Burley hosting “both sides of the debate” on this, instead of climate scientists & energy policy experts?

🚨 New investigation 🚨 found that big media brands like Reuters & The New York Times earn millions of dollars each year from clients, pushing messages that often contradict the journalism its own reporters do on the climate beat. 😠

Some people say the idea of a is too bold. But we don’t have time for more of the same. For 30 years we’ve missed our targets. Coal, oil, and gas are killing us. The good news is we don’t need them any more. We can phase out fossil fuels, if we work together.

I hope the work we did at DeSmog and Drilled documenting commercial ties between media and the fossil fuel industry will trigger conversations among news leadership teams about climate accountability, ethics and reputational risk. Amy Westervelt breaks down the issues:

My Reuters ‘Daily Briefing’ email - the headline of which is about - is ‘Sponsored by: Shell’. When it comes to controlling news & protecting profits, fossil fuel CO’s - which last year were responsible for just 1% of global investment in renewables - play for keeps.

Our main job is not to convince climate deniers at this moment in history. It’s not to weaken efforts to “build a bigger tent”. We need to engage, motivate and provide pathways for collective action for those who understand the climate emergency in order to build power…

Journalists need to organize and tell the world very clearly how the fossil fuel industry has intentionally chosen to get us to this level of climate catastrophe. The whole world needs to know

Climate change isn't just happening, it is being done to you against your will

The future you dream of won't exist, because it has been destroyed by powerful men who lied, deceived and conspired to steal it

There, did that help?
