A date for the diary. Next Wed @ 7:30 Shandon Area History Group will be hosting a talk on The Fortifications of Cork Harbour by one of our members Jason Byrne. Should be an interesting evening for anyone interested in the development of the cork harbour defences.

Members of the 26th Battalion being inspected by Oscar Traynor during the Emergency in Collins Barracks, Dublin. This unit had a large proportion of veterans from the 1916 Rising and War of Independence.

108 years on from the Easter Rising of 1916, Óglaigh na hÉireann proudly commemorated this seminal day in Irelands history. A poignant ceremony outside the GPO today served as a fitting tribute to a day that shaped our nation 🇮🇪

One of the finest remaining examples of a classical coastal artillery fort is due to reopen to the public in April following extensive restoration works. Fortifications at Camden Fort Meagher in Cork Harbour date back to the mid-1500s.

#OnThisDay 1922 Anti-Treaty IRA hijacked a tugboat Warrior & raided British vessel, NAV Upnor while out at sea. The pirates' booty included 800 cases of rifles, machine gun parts, 1,440 cases of ammunition & 1300 cases of filled shells & 750 boxes of fuses.

#OnThisDay 1915 Sister Alicia Kelly, from Mayo, enlisted in the Australian Army Nursing Service. She served in Egypt & France & was awarded a Military Medal for bravery under fire-during an air raid on the hospital, she wouldn't leave her patients' side.
