An explosive volcanic eruption in Indonesia last week launched volcanic aerosols 12 miles (20 kilometers) into the stratosphere. These tiny particles have a cooling effect. But the amount of material from this eruption was too small to cause significant climate impacts.

Some possible outcomes for global sea level rise are considered highly unlikely – but still might be important to coastal planners assessing risk over decades. A new study explores how to convey uncertainty to planners and other users of scientific data.
