Great article by Oliver Bullough on the Kafkaesque situation faced by people trying to protect the River Wye. Every way they turn, someone says no. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Flashback: this was the moment Oliver Bullough led a public meeting in Hay-on-Wye, where the crowd voted overwhelmingly in favour of applying for bathing status.

The people are determined to protect this river. We’re being failed by government.

This is a lovely listen.

Particularly enjoyed Paul Powlesland politely declining the label ‘environmental activist’ and instead choosing to describe himself as a ‘nature guardian’.

One of the most inspiring guardians in our midst.

Highly recommend this excellent and thought-provoking read on art, appropriation and identity politics.

It’s about what you say, not who you are.

The biggest obstacle to climate action is the fossil fuel industry. The second biggest are the Serious People who accept climate science but say it's unrealistic to cut emissions at the pace experts say is needed.

Why is govt offering millions of pounds to poultry farmers to incinerate their manure, but offering no support to farmers who would rather transition away from intensive poultry production?

The best solution is fewer chickens!

'We have a huge responsibility, the press, our community, and the wider mainstream world of theatre and everything, is to get the language right because it's discriminating, demeaning and awful.'

Jenny Sealey takes a moment to respond to yesterday's Daily Mail article.

The long-awaited government ‘Action Plan’ for the River Wye looks more like a plan to save the intensive poultry industry than one to save the river.

Over £40 million for incinerators and AD plants to process poultry muck. No system change, just a bung to business-as-usual.

With a backlog of 66k+ serious criminal cases it’s literally incredible that a single hour of court time is being wasted on prosecuting a 69-year old for holding a placard advising jurors of their rights prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/6570…

The plan in brief:

✅ River Buffers
❌ Only covers England, not Wales
❌ No mention of enforcement action against polluters
❌ No plan to reduce livestock numbers
❌ Promotes more AD plants, which could lead to more maize & soil damage
