An internship in the Division for Africa, Least Developed Countries and Special Programmes at UN Trade and Development is an opportunity for young people to learn more about the research & policy development, technical assistance & multilateral consensus building work we undertake.

This morning I opened the Executive Workshop on Negotiating & Drafting Rules of Origin for the WTO LDC Group. Together UN Trade and Development & European University Institute aim at enhancing the capacity of LDC delegates to engage effectively in multilateral trade negotiation.

The latest UN Trade and Development report forecasts economic growth in Africa will rise to 3.0% in 2024, up slightly from 2.9% in 2023.

But Africa’s largest economies – Nigeria, Egypt & South Africa – are underperforming, affecting overall prospects.

I had engaging discussions w/ Ms. Perez Onono Okelo, Executive Dean, School of Business, Economics & Tourism, faculty of Kenyatta University & senior faculty members of Nairobi & Strathmore universities. We discussed how best to anchor the #PCI in curriculums of higher education.

I had aninformative exchange of views w/ Mr. Cho Han Deog, Country Director, Korean International Cooperation Agency ( #KOICA ) Ethiopia Office on export diversification, value addition & poverty reduction through holistic, integrated & carefully sequenced policies & strategies.

I had engaging discussions w/ Mr. Louis Souchet, Directeur d'Agence Française de Développment, in Addis Ababa on how to strengthen collaboration & maximize synergies to support development efforts of Ethiopia, including through Holistic Productive Capacities Developme Programme.

I had informative & substantive discussions with Dr. Fitsum Assefa, Minister for Planning & Development of #Ethiopia on @UNCTAD60th & Ethiopia's Holistic Productive Capacities Development Programme, as well as the way forward.

I had an informative exchange of views with Ms Madeleine Nyiratuza, UN Development Regional Technical Advisor for Water, Oceans, Ecosystems & Biodiversity in Africa on blueconomy, African #SIDS and the nexus between trade, environment & development.

I had engaging and enriching discussions with H.E. Ambassador Javier Niño, Delegation of the #EU to the #AU @EUtoAUn in #AddisAbaba on supporting #African countries in their development efforts, including in implementation of the #ACFTA .

I had the opportunity to meet Matthias Zana Naab, Director, #UNDP Regional Service Center for Africa & exchanged views how to best harness blue economy, biodiversity & bioprospecting to advance socioeconomic development while ensuring environmental protection & sustainability.
