Do you know that a second Arecibo Message was prepared but never transmitted? 😯phl.upr.edu/message #TheLastAreciboMessage
The PHL will update its Habitable Exoplanets Catalog on January 8, 2024 🤔 phl.upr.edu/projects/habit… #exoplanets #astrobiology

NASA Webb Telescope Here are Planetary HabLab estimates of the mean global surface temperatures of the planets around TRAPPIST-1 for thin to thick atmospheres (<10 bars). TRAPPIST-1 b, measured ~500 K, is within our predictions. 😀
Our Planetary HabLab students Vanelie Olivieri Encarnación and Alexander O. Molina Ortiz at the Arecibo Observatory's 12 meter Radio Telescope. 🙂
This paper shows that the method proposed by Prof. Abel Méndez 🔭 🔬 & Dr. Ed Rivera-Valentín to calculate the mean equilibrium temperature of planetary bodies in eccentric orbits can also be used to describe the internal thermal state of comets. iopscience.iop.org/article/10.384… iopscience.iop.org/article/10.384…

The Habitable Exoplanets Catalog was updated with data from NASA's @nexsci_ipac. There are up to 61 potentially habitable worlds out of 5200+ known #exoplanets . Planets LP 890-9 c, Ross 508 b, and GJ 514 b were just added to the catalog. Explore them here! phl.upr.edu/projects/habit…

To develop best practices for evaluating the habitability of extraterrestrial environments, astrobiologists should learn from the work of ecologists studying life on Earth. Commentary by Prof. Abel Méndez 🔭 🔬 physicstoday.scitation.org/do/10.1063/PT.…
The PHL has two presentations at #AbSciCon . Monday by Carlos Ortiz Quintana on using the paleo-Earth to reconstruct the temperatures of Earth-like planets. Friday by Prof. Abel Méndez 🔭 🔬 on habitability models. agu.confex.com/agu/abscicon21… agu.confex.com/agu/abscicon21… #AbSciCon 2022
Only 21 out of 5000 confirmed planets might be potentially habitable, i.e, Earth-sized orbiting within the habitable zone of their star. Up to 59 if you want to be more optimistic. Link in planets takes you to the NExScI: Exoplanet Science Institute Caltech IPAC catalog. phl.upr.edu/projects/habit… NASA Exoplanets
