RIP, Robin Hogarth, who passed yesterday. Robin was a giant in the field of decision research. The Behavioral Science group at Chicago Booth would not be the same without Robin and Hillel Einhorn. But I will most remember him as a wonderful and kind man.

Daniel Kahneman was one of the keenest chroniclers of humans as we actually are. And he knew better than anyone his own shortcomings & blind spots. To remember both his greatness & humanity, we collected memories & lessons from some of those closest to him.behavioralscientist.org/remembering-da…

My favorite Hogarth idea:'wicked' and 'kind' environments for learning. Take driving. Learning how hard to press the accelerator is kind, tho good to practice in a parking lot. Assessing your driving skill: wicked. Easy to think you are above average.

Helps correct a common misperception about nudging. It is *not* about telling people what to do, it is about improving household decision making *in markets*. Defaults are common in the private sector, for good and bad. Same order as last time? Good. Hard to unsubscribe: Bad.

Farewell Robin. You were one of the greatest JDM researchers ever and someone who soared above the small stuff to see what really matters.

Thanks to my wonderful friends at Chicago Booth for hosting me yesterday for a behavioral economics seminar. I had a terrific time and also got to snap this shot with the portrait of one of my favorite coauthors. Framing matters, Richard H Thaler! Roman Family Center for Decision Research

What has the largest effect on behaviour, framing or a default? Research by @antoniakrefeld et al finds it depends, and explains how and why:

Nice to see serious looks at how well this works (see papers linked in article). I share an example (Oregon) in but its great to see it evaluated systematically.
