Interesting to see 'curricula as reform' lighting up as I'm at Vanderbilt to discuss CA's effort to scale SoR. It had distinctive design features that may have supported real implementation at some scale

CA's early SoR initiative compellingly linked funding & oversight with school-level flexibility to design & own their reforms.

This contrasts with statewide literacy reforms that declare for SoR without serious attention to changing classroom practices (including CA's AB 2222?).

Heartily seconded! It's deeply important to benchmark this result against the status quo in U.S. schools where far too many decisions are made without any good evidence or an intentional agenda to build such evidence in a manner that's relevant to local contexts.

The pandemic's multi-faceted, negative effects on education seem substantial and enduring. That makes the curious rise in HS graduation rates all the more provocative.

I appreciated the opportunity to speak with Doug Dowson The Economist for this important story.

We can achieve big wins for our kids and the nation by focusing on core education practices such as effective, early-literacy instruction (nytimes.com/2023/12/04/us/…). Glad to see our work on San Francisco's math reforms mentioned here too.

My favorite quote from Tom Dee, which had to be cut, relates to figuring out how many kids have switched to private school. With the current state of education data, it's tough, even though “we live in a time & place where I know the moment a package has landed on my doorstep.'

In many US cities, the COVID-19 pandemic supercharged the longer-run demographic trends reshaping enrollment in our public schools. Gail Cornwall's excellent reporting gives us a case study of how this is playing out in San Francisco. 👇

California could become the next state mandating a science of reading approach.

In an elementary school that has already embraced the teaching style, every minute counts. Turning students into readers, the principal says, is a 'civil right.'
