Excellent!😲 Ursula von der Leyen just announced that she will put forward a proposal for an EU import ban on products made with forced labour. #soteu21
A few months ago we Greens/EFA in the EU Parliament 🌍 had started to push for this idea 💪🏼 that will help cleaning up our supply chains from forced labour.
BIG NEWS: @UvdL announces an EU ban on products produced with #forcedlabour . ”Because #humanrights are not for sale.” Applauds!!! We Greens/EFA in the EU Parliament 🌍 have pushed this for quite a while, together with colleagues from EP's Responsible Business Conduct working group .
Illustrative supply chain map by Anna Cavazzini & Earthsight shows how #deforestation is linked to European car production. This reinforces the need for ambitious and effective EU due diligence legislation #mHREDD #bizhumanrights

#Humanrights and #environmental #duediligence saves lives!
Global Witness report finds that 227 #EnvironmentDefenders were murdered last year. Supply chains drive this violence. This is why the European Commission legislative proposal on #HREDD is crucial.

'Human rights litigation against corporations can be even more difficult than David's struggle against Goliath.
It's not just that corporations' legal teams and budgets are bigger. The whole game is rigged.
The key question is: how can we improve David's odds?'

What can we learn from the judgment ordering Shell to prevent future damage in the Niger Delta?
What about the case against aluminum giant Norsk Hydro?
Or the proceedings against Casino and Total?

In Madagascar 11 000 children mine Mica resources for the European market. It should be mandatory for firms to tell us where our phones are produced by whom, and how it affects the environment. Now there is a chance to address those issues by the EU legislation. #duediligence

Let’s hope this delay doesn’t mean that we are somehow falling back to the old reality, where we trust that all sorts of voluntary mechanisms will make businesses accountable and responsible. That simply doesn’t work. EP's Responsible Business Conduct working group politico.eu/article/europe…
I and Professor John G. Ruggie will discuss the EU's due diligence efforts from a global perspective. With the European #GreenDeal the EU chose to head towards a more sustainable economy. Which role can due diligence play on this path. Register👉 #EMAStalks europeanparliament.webex.com/europeanparlia…
