In 1934, an aspiring writer asked Ernest Hemingway what books he should read.

He responded with a list of 16 classic works.

They're Great Books. I suggest you read them.

Or, at least, read this thread about them:

“We have to figure out how [H5N1 is] transmitting, how it’s evolving, and stop the transmission so we don’t get to a position where we have to think about how we do a broader response for this in humans,' Dr. Nahid Bhadelia tells The Boston Globe's Adam Piore.

“If I were a betting person,” she said. “I would guess that there are already other farm workers who may have been infected.”

Dr. Nahid Bhadelia worries federal officials aren’t doing enough to prevent a mutation from getting a foothold in humans.

Why did a state social worker pose as a teen in three Boston schools and a treatment center? And how could nobody notice for so long?

The 2009 H1N1 pandemic traced back to a human virus that got into pigs decades ago & evolved more slowly in them, eventually differing enough from human H1s to be able to trigger a pandemic.
Would be good to know how fast is evolving in cows.

“In many ways adults have taken over children’s lives. And I think the cost of that is that it takes away from children’s own opportunities to figure things out for themselves.”

Loved this piece from Adam Piore on how overprotective parenting could contribute to a rise in teen mental health troubles. As always, Adam manages to get across his huge depth of research through the most readable, interesting writing: bostonglobe.com/2024/04/22/met…

• Biggest Regrets
• Biggest Lessons

Suppressing stressful experiences doesn’t build resilience. It drains resolve.

Stifling unpleasant thoughts and emotions saps energy, limits support, and raises the risk of rebound later.

The best way to cope with distress isn't to ignore it. It's to acknowledge it.

Adam Piore Just finished reading 'The New Kings of NY'. Truly outstanding. What I found most interesting was that all of the characters were compelling. Also striking that I didn't find any of them to be particularly unlikeable (in fact, Kent Swig esp seemed like a good guy).
