Some of the wider context to this is that over 19,000 people have now crossed the channel since the Illegal Migration Act gained Royal Assent. That Act will prevent any of those people having their asylum claim processed in the UK. Instead they'll be left in a permanent limbo.

England is making good progress towards eliminating hep C. But there is a need for action now to ensure we will be prepared to maintain elimination status.

Yesterday, we launched the new Hepatitis C Elimination Maintenance Strategy Group. Find out more: hepctrust.org.uk/blog/2024/03/h…

This week marks 10 years since the death of my friend Adjuah, who had sickle cell anaemia.

In 2021, a landmark report outlined shocking care failures that led to her death and many others.

On Thursday, I asked the government when they will implement its recommendations.

Rachel Halford, CEO of The Hepatitis C Trust, said: “No one who has been impacted by the failings of the government should ever be forced to spend the rest of their life campaigning for the government to do the right thing to correct historic wrongs.”

1. I don’t know about you but I’m totally exhausted. Doesn’t help that I’ve been bed-ridden for most of the last week, admittedly. The recent government “climbdown” on the minimum income rule for spouses and partners is a good illustration of why I’m so, so tired of it all.

When the PM talks about blocking asylum for people who arrive irregularly, he’s talking a group of people who would highly likely be recognised as refugees if their claims were processed.

The Government has announced that opt-out hep C & B and HIV testing in A&Es will be extended to a further 46 hospitals across England.

Last week, we held an event in Parliament calling for this with partners Terrence Higgins Trust, National AIDS Trust and British Liver Trust.

Some overdue positive news for sickle cell patients.

Great to have the report I’ve written for Sickle Cell Society on the sickle cell nursing workforce feature prominently in Channel 4 News’ reporting, ahead of the report’s publication next week.
