These otherworldly things are... legumes! What you see are two fruits from the genus Scorpiurus. The name derives from the Latin 'scorpius' -Scorpion- and the ancient Greek 'urus' -tail-, clearly referring to the shape of the spiny recurved legumes. Luckily these don't sting!
