Love seeing Abigail Jacobs work assessing human body-related data used to build AI covered here ... to be presented soon at ACM CHI Conference.

Like many AI data related problems, there is time to redirect, recalibrate.

Don't believe hype that there isn't time. spectrum.ieee.org/motion-capture…

'Gold standard' motion-capture data that's being used to build all sorts of applications is based on old studies that focused on certain body types... and sometimes used dismembered cadavers. TL;DR: We evaluate the role of relevance in fair ranking from an interdisciplinary perspective.
Measures to avoid unfair outcomes of rankings generated by online platforms often aim to distribute user attention or exposure in proportion to ranking worthiness or merit.

Many of the grant questions are taking pretty settled topics in AI ethics (absent very specific context, you should never identify someone's gender from an image) and reframing them as open for debate ('asking questions') by asking for 'democratic input':/ openai.com/blog/democrati…

Alg. fairness doesnt account for variance & needs to. Consider a simple example: Measuring variance by bootstrapping 10 models on COMPAS. Classifying recidivism for some individuals is so unstable, it's effectively a coin-flip, it's *arbitrary* arxiv.org/abs/2301.11562 (Ind. 2) 1/
