I suspect a lot of the currently “most faithful” GOP voters are newbies to the GOP. And that no small chunk of those who left the GOP in recent years had been voting straight GOP for decades.

Senate Rs made it abundantly clear that they’d rather have border security as a campaign issue this fall than actually pass legislation (however misguided) that attempted to address the issue.
