Today marks Fred Korematsu Day, the birthday of Fred Korematsu. In commemoration of Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties and the Constitution, members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) released the following statements.

CA’s prison system tried to dismiss our lawsuit against their illegal discrimination towards anyone it assumes was born outside the US.

We packed the court and the judge ruled unequivocally: CDCR can’t evade accountability. The case moves forward.

This news is a shock and a tragedy.

I worked closely with Hammad and saw so much of his dedication, brilliance, compassion, and joy -- especially his joy in becoming a new father earlier this year. I'm so sad that he is no longer with us.

2 of these 3 Targets (Oakland and SF) are smaller-format stores that depend on lots of local foot traffic to thrive. I have to wonder how much of this decision is driven by 'organized retail crime' vs. the company consolidating into its bigger stores as consumer demand falls.

With no orgs or law enforcement opposing #AB1306 , it’s disappointing the Governor would veto this policy.

It was never the intention of the Legislature to exclude immigrants from restorative justice reform policies.

ALC is deeply disappointed and outraged that Gov. Newsom vetoed the #HOMEAct , which took common sense steps to make California’s prison system apply broadly-supported criminal justice reforms with equal application to immigrants and refugees. 1/

After close of business on a Friday night, Governor Newsom vetoed the #HOMEAct —even though this widely-supported measure had no opposition from law enforcement.

As the coalition statement says, this was a cruel, callous, and cowardly act.

Friends Tin Nguyen and An Thanh Nguyen first met in county jail and connected through their experiences as Vietnamese refugee youth in Orange County.
